Veld Management is crucial to the success of a game ranch, as the veld condition determines the Animal Carrying Capacity of the game ranch. Animal Carrying Capacity is the capacity of the veld to sustain a certain amount of animals on the veld without over utilizing the area in a degrading manner. Game ranches that concentrate on the improvement of the veld condition tend to handle the dry seasons better than game ranches that over utilized their veld.
Well managed game ranches that have the optimum veld condition also tend to show excellent wildlife population growth during the wet season, with better animal survival rates, resulting in a higher number of animals to improve eco-tourism, hunting, and that can be sold live.
Better veld conditions enable better wildlife production, which in turn results in a better Game Ranch Income.
Bush encroachment is defined as the thickening of the woody layer (tree layer, usually shrublike thorny bushes) and can be to such an extent that not even browsers can utilize the area, due to the very thick woody vegetation.
Bush encroachment tend to be the result of extensive overgrazing, where the grass layer has been utilized to such an extent that it cannot recover sufficiently and is therefore replaced by a woody layer which is more resilient.
Depending on the region, bush encroaching species such as Sickle bush (Dichrostachys cinerea) and Umbrella thorn (Acacia tortilis) can become quite a nuisance, as they can develop into great clumps that are not easily penetrable by the animals. Although these clumps have a lot of browsing potential, very little is available to the animals as only the leaves on the outside of the clumps are available |
